12 URI student Biomedical Engineering teams presented at the Northeast Bioengineering Conference at Binghamton University in NY. 3rd prize was awarded to URI seniors Sakoun Phommavongsa, Robert Valenti, and Tracy Waweru for their project, “Stove Barrier for Burn Prevention in Kenya”. Dr. Shahla Yetka, lead scientist of the Burn Prevention-Africa project funded by the United Nations served as co-advisor. The project aimed to prevent children in the slums of Kenya from suffering from burns over coal stoves used inside their living areas. Student teams are from BioMedical Engineering Capstone course taught by Professor Ying Sun, Dr. Eugene Chabot, and Dr. Jiang Wu.
